What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that’s surgically implanted into the jaw bone to replace the root portion of a lost tooth. It resolves the esthetic problem of a missing tooth. Once we restore the implant with a crown, it performs and looks just like a natural tooth.
Titanium is biocompatible, meaning that the body readily accepts the material, and allows the implant post to fully integrate with the jaw bone and tissue. Once healing is complete, the implant actually becomes part of the structure of your jaw.
This provides a measure of stability that is not found with other tooth replacement options. When the implant has fully integrated, Dr. Um completes the process by creating a dental crown, bridge, or denture that is affixed to the implant.
Specific factors affect the success of your dental implant. One is that there must be enough bone in the jaw for successful placement of the implant. In some cases, it may be necessary to perform a procedure like bone graft surgery or a sinus lift to get the best results.
